The FFP2 protective mask prevents pathogens and fine dust particles from entering the body through the nose and mouth.

FFP2 masks can be used in accordance with DGUV rule 112-190 at pollutant concentrations up to 10 times the occupational exposure limit (OEL). They provide protection against water- and oil-based harmful particles, but not against carcinogenic substances, radioactive particles, airborne biological agents of risk group 3 and enzymes. The overall pass rate is a maximum of 8%, at least 94% of the pollutants in the air are filtered. Typical applications for an FFP2 mask are handling soft wood, fiberglass, metal, plastics (not PVC), and oils.

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) recommends FFP2 and FFP3 masks for the treatment and care of patients with coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 infection.
